{"id":133,"date":"2023-03-15T00:45:23","date_gmt":"2023-03-15T00:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/knifevoyager.com\/?p=133"},"modified":"2023-03-15T00:45:23","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T00:45:23","slug":"know-your-surroundings-epictactical","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/knifevoyager.com\/?p=133","title":{"rendered":"Know Your Surroundings \u2013 EpicTactical"},"content":{"rendered":"<div propname=\"articleBody\">\n<p>By Dana Benner<\/p>\n<p>Dangers are all around us.\u00a0 Some are obvious, but many not so much.\u00a0 That means having to stay alert at all times no matter where you are.\u00a0 Some of these potential hazards include predatory threats, but far more have nothing to do with predation.\u00a0 How many people die or are severely injured by stepping into old wells or cellar holes in the woods?\u00a0 How many people have been swept away from the unstable banks of swollen rivers or have fallen through unsafe ice?\u00a0 How about a fire in a restaurant or movie theatre?\u00a0 Even ice falling from a building\u2019s roof can prove fatal.\u00a0 Most of these potential dangers can be avoided by being aware of your surroundings and using a little common sense.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-16.jpeg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Steps for Situational Awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Col. Jeff Cooper\u2019s color coded chart has become the basis to go by for situational awareness.\u00a0 The following is my adaptation to Col. Cooper\u2019s list:<\/p>\n<p>Staying out of a potentially bad situation is always the best policy.\u00a0 Listen to that \u201clittle voice\u201d in your head.\u00a0 Do you really need to travel through that dark alley or cross a slippery log across a swollen stream?\u00a0 If not, then don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep Your Eyes and Head Moving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Detect possible issues before they happen then refer to step one.\u00a0 Be aware of that person coming up behind you or spot that rattlesnake before it is too late.\u00a0 Even the best camouflaged predator (animal or human) can be spotted if you keep your eyes moving).<\/p>\n<p>In urban areas learn where the dangerous areas are and then refer back to step one.\u00a0 Before heading out on a trek learn about the plants and animals you may encounter.\u00a0 Are there natural features that could give you problems?\u00a0 Listen to weather reports before heading out and heed all warning signs.<\/p>\n<p>Whether in a populated area or in a rural setting, going it alone will sooner or later lead to trouble.\u00a0 Ideally it is best to travel in pairs.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t, then at least tell someone where you are going and when to expect you back.\u00a0 In wild areas leave a note in your vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>A great many of the potential dangers are ones that have originated with humans.\u00a0 I often hear people divide areas into what they consider \u201cwilderness\u201d and areas \u201ctouched by humans\u201d as if there is a difference.\u00a0 I prefer to use the terms \u201cnatural\u201d and \u201cman-made\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-02-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10851\" src=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-02-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-02-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-02-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-02-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-02-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-02-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-02-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-02-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Where I live in New Hampshire you usually do not have to travel too far into the forest before you start finding the remnants of past human habitation.\u00a0 Stone walls, the remains of early farming settlements, crisscross everywhere.\u00a0 Why is this important?\u00a0 Where there are stone walls there is likely to be old wells and cellar holes covered by hundreds of years of debris and brush; unseen and very dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Many hikers and hunters have fallen victim to these hidden traps because they didn\u2019t take the clues seriously.\u00a0 Being so focus on their goal they fail to be aware of the entire situation.\u00a0 Even the best of us can, and have, fall victim to some of these \u201ctraps\u201d.\u00a0 Even being fully aware that I was hunting in an overgrown farmstead of old, and watching for depressions in the undergrowth which would indicate a well or cellar hole, I got hung up on a mysterious strand of old barbed wire that was strung low between two trees.\u00a0 No real damage was done, but it shows that the danger is there.<\/p>\n<p>When I travel to densely populated urban areas my awareness levels are heightened.\u00a0 Yes, there are threats from people with bad intent, but I am much more concerned with other things like being run over by cars and trucks, falling into an open manhole, needles and broken glass and ice falling from rooftops.\u00a0 I watch where I walk and my eyes are constantly scanning the area.\u00a0 In movie theatres and restaurants I always scan the area, find the exits and sit with my back to the wall if possible.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because I want to get out fast if I have to and I want to spot potential dangers before they happen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nature:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When people get out in the natural world they seem to focus strictly on the most visible, or the most covered, possible threats; large predators.\u00a0 While you should always be aware of these possible dangers, people are more likely to be severely stung by wasps and hornets or bitten by a snake than they are to be attacked by a bear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wasps and Hornets:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-08-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10852\" src=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-08-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-08-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-08-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-08-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-08-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-08-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-08-90x60.jpg 90w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-08-563x375.jpg 563w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-08-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most people will never find a bear or a mountain lion in their backyard, but all of us, whether we live in a rural or urban setting, will face wasps and hornets sooner or later.\u00a0 According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) the U.S. averages 62 deaths per year from hornet, wasp and bee stings.<\/p>\n<p>Most bees, with the exception of the Africanized-honey bees, are not aggressive unless you disturb the hive.\u00a0 The same cannot be said for wasps and hornets.\u00a0 The trick is to locate the nest and eliminate it.\u00a0 Unlike bees, which travel great distances to gather pollen, wasps and hornets are either flying from a nearby nest or searching for an area to build a nest.\u00a0 Watch where they go and you will likely find the nest.\u00a0 People who don\u2019t pay attention open themselves to getting stung.<\/p>\n<p>While in Arizona I dropped my guard.\u00a0 I was in Sedona with friends to hike in the hills. I was prepared for snakes, but I hadn\u2019t even thought about \u201cbees\u201d and that is where I went wrong.\u00a0 As we hiked into a canyon I looked up and there, under a rock overhang was a huge nest.\u00a0 While we never approached the nest, the \u201cbees\u201d were extremely upset.\u00a0 Back at the top I kicked myself for dropping the ball.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t take all possible situations into account.\u00a0 Don\u2019t make the same mistake.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-09-desert-around-Sedona-AZ-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10854\" src=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-09-desert-around-Sedona-AZ-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-09-desert-around-Sedona-AZ-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-09-desert-around-Sedona-AZ-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-09-desert-around-Sedona-AZ-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-09-desert-around-Sedona-AZ-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-09-desert-around-Sedona-AZ-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-09-desert-around-Sedona-AZ-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-09-desert-around-Sedona-AZ-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Snakes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Venomous snakes are found throughout the United States, except Hawaii and Alaska.\u00a0 My travels often take me to places where venomous snakes are very common, so wherever I travel I need to be aware of the potential dangers and do whatever I can to avoid them.\u00a0 The CDC estimates that 7,000-8,000 people per year are bitten by venomous snakes and about 5% of these people die.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be one of them.<\/p>\n<p>Snake bites can happen anywhere.\u00a0 Snakes normally bite when they are startled or feel threatened.\u00a0 If they can escape they will.\u00a0 In the wild, snakes have space to escape, but about those snakes curled up in the woodpile near your home?\u00a0 How about under your stairs or in your shrubs?\u00a0 If you are in venomous snake territory use extreme caution before you reach your hands into anywhere that you cannot see clearly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Natural Dangers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Animals are not the only natural dangers that one needs to be aware of.\u00a0 Swollen streams, thin ice, broken limbs dangling high overhead and potentially severe weather are all situations that you need to be aware of.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Swollen streams:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-03.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10890\" src=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-03-1024x682.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-03-1024x682.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-03-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-03-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-03-90x60.jpeg 90w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-03-563x375.jpeg 563w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-03-600x400.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-03.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>April 1<sup>st<\/sup> is the opening day of trout season in most of the Northeast.\u00a0 Anglers who have spent the better part of six months cooped up are half crazy as they rush to any waterbody that is free of ice.\u00a0 Here lies the problem.\u00a0 Streams, brooks and rivers are usually swollen with snow melt and Spring rains and the water is extremely cold.\u00a0 The water is usually high and moving fast and the banks are soft and weakened. All put together this is a very dangerous situation.<\/p>\n<p>If you fall in, even with a PFD (personal Floatation Device), your chances are slim. Hypothermia can set in in a matter of minutes.\u00a0 You need to get out and get warm quickly if you hope to survive.\u00a0 Is there any trout worth all of this?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Widow makers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-07-rotated.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10888\" src=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-07-682x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you walk in the woods, a city park or anywhere there are tall trees, look up.\u00a0 There is a danger lurking in the tree tops known as a \u201cwidow maker\u201d that can take you out in an instant.\u00a0 \u201cWidow makers\u201d are dead tree branches, or even an entire tree, that have broken free, possibly due to a storm, and are hung up and waiting for just the right moment to fall.\u00a0 Stay far away from these if at all possible as the slightest breeze can bring them down.\u00a0 Even a relatively small tree limb can prove fatal when it falls from a great height.\u00a0 This is a dangerous situation that can present itself at anytime.\u00a0 While in the woods my eyes are constantly moving as you never know when you will be put in such a situation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weather:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Weather is a big, yet often overlooked factor.\u00a0 A sudden change in the weather can turn a fine day into a life threatening situation.\u00a0 Before venturing anywhere know what type of weather conditions you are likely to expect.\u00a0 Realize that even a few feet in elevation can make a big difference.<\/p>\n<p>Every year hikers are rescued off our mountains because they were not prepared for changing weather conditions.\u00a0 At the base of the mountain it could be 80 degrees, but at the top it could be 30 degrees with high winds and whiteout conditions.\u00a0 If you are wearing shorts and sneakers you could quickly become a statistic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Items to Carry:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-11-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-10856\" (max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When a situation happens you need to be prepared to act.\u00a0 The following is a short list of items to carry.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bear Spray or Pepper Spray<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When in an urban area I carry pepper spray.\u00a0 While it will not subdue any potential attacker it may buy you time to get away.\u00a0 Bear spray is a bit extreme to use on people, but it is a good deterrent on bears, mountain lions, coyotes or dogs.\u00a0 Like with pepper spray, it may buy you some time.<\/p>\n<p>A cell phone is good (as long as it is turned on and you are not distracted by it).\u00a0 If you find yourself in a questionable situation call for help and keep the other person on the line.\u00a0 In the woods I carry a two-way radio that allows me to contact emergency personal if needed.<\/p>\n<p>Having a good first-aid kit could make all the difference.\u00a0 If someone is attacked, either by a human or animal or fall down a cliff, they may need medical help right away.\u00a0 You just may be the first person on the scene.<\/p>\n<p>While non-lethal means is always the first choice, you may find yourself in a situation where lethal force is your only choice.\u00a0 For a human attacker go with nothing smaller than a .38 Special.\u00a0 If you are in bear, mountain lion or moose territory go with nothing smaller than .357 Mag.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is no trick to situational awareness.\u00a0 All it really takes is the use of common sense.\u00a0 Simply, do not put yourself in a dangerous situation and be observant of everything going on around you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/epictactical.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Awareness-13-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"
